The Webster City Hotel/Motel Tax Board listened to three presentations by grant applicants for the 2010-2011 fall/winter session. Three other presentations were given by previous winners of the money, and how the organizations spent the funds.
J&J Speedway/Raceway requested $4,000 from the board. Jenny and Jason VanSickel said that RC Racing is a growing activity in the community. "It is also a rarity," Jenny VanSickel said. "There are not many indoor RC tracks in the state of Iowa that are currently in use today. We have managed to organize an activity that includes the young and the young at heart." According to VanSickel, RC Racing involves different scales of cars run by remote control. The vehicles run on a oval indoor racetrack composed of a foam rubber surface.
The track begins in December and ends in April. The activity meets on a weekly basis, usually on Sundays. In its third year, the track will be relocated from the Van Diest Building at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds to the back half of the Farm Journal building. "We will incur some expenses that we didn't have in years prior," she said. Funds would be used to by tables and chairs, to buy additional track, lumber for an outer retaining wall, billboard signs for around the track, website updates and additional transponder units that are used for scoring.
The Midwest Rampage requested $3,539 from the board to purchase regulation field goals for the field inside the Bob Buckley Track. "Last year was the inaugural season of the Midwest Rampage as a minor league football team in Webster City," Darin Eklund, general manager said. "We honestly were humbled by the response we got from the fans." He said that in collaboration with the Youth Sports Foundation, which is the fifth- and sixth-grade football teams, the team was able to buy a new scoreboard for the field. "This year, we would like to put up some regulation goal posts on the field," Eklund said. "The ones that are there currently are not regulation and they are not safe."
Team President John Elkin said that the Midwest Rampage is one of eight minor league football teams in the state of Iowa. "We want to ensure that other teams keep playing us," Elkin said. "We want people to keep coming back and not be turned off by the place we play." The 2010 squad consisted of 48 players from 21 different cities. Only 27 percent of the team was from Webster City, while 73 percent was from other cities. The team sold 625 season tickets, with 57 percent sold to Webster City residents. More than 1,500 attendees were at last season's home games.
The Webster City Community Theatre requested $5,682 in funds from the board for advertising and publicity. Theater member Loween Getter said with the last season's four productions, the theater had 153 volunteers. WCCT has started to collaborate more with area businesses, such as Verizon and Second St. Emporium to promote the theater. Much of the advertising would be for area papers and the local radio station. WCCT also would use the funds for "Save the Date" cards, postcards and working with local restaurants and motels to promote "Dinner/Theatre" and "Stay and Play" packages. The project would total $6,682. The theater received $9,925 from the 2009-2010 tax fund.
